Catch your breath

Most of our lives are busy. Many people are tired or exhausted by the end of the day.

Here's an excellent question: How to slow down, catch your breath, and enjoy the present moment?

One of the foremost teachers of mindfulness, Thich Nhat Hanh, can help:

"You can see everything in the universe in one tangerine. When you peel it and smell it, it's wonderful. You can take your time eating a tangerine and be very happy."

Sounds easy? But… are you doing it?

Here's a refresher on mindfulness:

Mindfulness is a practice where we focus on whatever task we do from moment to moment. We pay attention, aware of our thoughts and emotions but not reacting or judging them.

When we walk, we enjoy walking; when we talk to someone, we do not look at our phones simultaneously.

When we are mindful, we stop multitasking.

Try this with one breath: close your eyes and notice the moment you inhale and exhale. Were you thinking, commenting, judging, or correcting anything while you paid attention to that breath.

That is mindful breathing, and the skill to be able to stay present to the next and next breath is your practice.

Your mind wants to distract you and ties you to your anxious thoughts about the past or the future. Mindful breathing, one breath at a time, will teach you to slow down, be aware, and present.

The same happens when we eat mindfully.

  🌴 Tiny Island - Spend time with your food.

  1. Before you eat, stop thinking and be aware of your breathing.
  2. Breathe in the scent of your food.
  3. Relax. Be still.
  4. Give your undivided attention to your food.
  5. Slowly take a bite and chew.
  6. Savor the taste, celebrate it, and smile.

Food at its best is nourishing, very much like the breath you take.

Enjoy eating your tangerine or apple or drinking tea without worrying, planning, reading, talking, or watching TV.

Be present!

Enjoy eating and receiving the gift of slowing down, feeling happier, and enjoying the present moment.
